Magnetic Incremental Encoders

Contactless magnetic sensing for robust speed and position feedback in harsh, contaminated industrial environments.

Overview

Magnetic incremental encoders use a multi-pole magnetic ring or disc and Hall-effect or magneto-resistive sensors to generate pulse output without physical contact between the sensing element and the moving target. This non-contact sensing principle makes magnetic encoders inherently resistant to the contamination, vibration, and shock conditions that damage or degrade optical encoder systems. Magnetic encoders tolerate oil mist, metal swarf, coolant splash, dust, humidity, and condensation without performance degradation. They operate across a wide temperature range - typically -40°C to +100°C - and maintain reliable output even under shaft runout or misalignment levels that would affect optical systems. Standard magnetic designs achieve resolutions up to 4,096 PPR - lower than optical equivalents but sufficient for the majority of industrial drive and conveyor feedback applications. Output options include HTL, TTL/RS422, NPN/PNP open collector, and push-pull formats. IP67 and IP68 sealing is standard, with stainless steel housings available for washdown environments. Hollow shaft, solid shaft, and bearingless variants cover all standard industrial mounting configurations. Magnetic incremental encoders are the reliable choice for steel plants, mining equipment, outdoor conveyors, material handling drives, heavy-duty machine tools, crane drives, and any application where environmental conditions are unsuitable for optical sensing. They are also a commonly specified upgrade when optical encoders have experienced repeated contamination-related failures, delivering significantly better uptime at comparable cost.
