Self-Aligning Ball Bearings

Compensates for shaft misalignment and housing bore error - essential for long shafts, conveyors, and agricultural equipment.

Overview

Self-aligning ball bearings have two rows of balls running in a common spherical outer ring raceway - a design that allows the inner ring and shaft to tilt relative to the outer ring by up to approximately 3-4 degrees without introducing additional bearing stress. This angular self-alignment capability accommodates shaft deflection under load, housing bore misalignment from manufacturing tolerances, and shaft sag in long-span conveyor and agricultural machine systems. The spherical outer raceway means the bearing will not generate internal stresses or premature failure when installed in a slightly misaligned condition - a practical advantage in welded or fabricated machine frames where perfect housing alignment is difficult to achieve consistently. Load capacity is predominantly radial with moderate axial capacity - appropriate for the majority of conveying and process equipment applications. Adaptor sleeve mounting versions accommodate standard shaft tolerances without precision shaft grinding - a significant cost advantage for agricultural, conveying, and general industrial applications. Plummer block and flanged housing-mounted versions are widely available. Self-aligning ball bearings are the preferred bearing for long conveyor shaft spans where shaft deflection is unavoidable, agricultural machinery drives with imprecise frame fabrication, textile machine rolls and spindles, fans and ventilators on welded frames, and woodworking machinery. They are the practical bearing of choice wherever low cost and tolerance of misalignment outweigh the need for high load capacity or precision.
