Angular Contact Ball Bearings

Designed for combined radial and high axial loads - essential for machine tool spindles, pumps, and precision gearboxes.

Overview

Angular contact ball bearings transmit forces at a defined contact angle - typically 15, 25, or 40 degrees - between the ball, inner ring, and outer ring. This angular geometry allows significantly higher axial load capacity in one direction compared to deep groove ball bearings of equivalent size. For bidirectional axial loading, pairs or sets are arranged face-to-face, back-to-back, or in tandem configurations. High-speed performance is a key characteristic - the angular contact geometry, combined with precision ball complement and raceway finish, enables stable operation at speeds exceeding 30,000 RPM in machine tool spindle applications. Universal matching ensures equal load distribution and controlled preload in spindle sets. Contact angle selection balances rigidity and speed - lower angles support higher speeds; higher angles carry greater axial loads. Precision grades (P5, P4, P2) with tightly controlled dimensional and running accuracy tolerances are specified for machine tool spindles. Standard grades are used in pumps, gearboxes, and general precision machinery. Super-precision variants with ceramic balls support the highest speed ranges in machine tool and turbomachinery applications. Angular contact ball bearings are the standard choice for CNC machining centre and lathe spindles, multi-stage centrifugal pumps and compressors, gearbox thrust faces requiring axial location, ball screw support bearings, and robotic joint bearings requiring combined load capacity at high angular velocity. They are rarely the correct choice for simple radial-only load applications where deep groove ball bearings are more economical.
