Spherical roller bearings have two rows of barrel-shaped rollers running in a common spherical outer ring raceway. The spherical outer raceway allows the inner ring, shaft, and roller assembly to tilt relative to the outer ring by up to 1.5-2.5 degrees - making these bearings self-aligning under shaft deflection, housing misalignment, and frame distortion without generating additional internal bearing stress or reducing service life. The double-row roller configuration delivers very high radial load capacity - 2 to 5 times greater than equivalent-size ball bearings - combined with the ability to carry high axial loads in both directions. This combination of capacity, self-alignment, and axial load capability makes spherical roller bearings the standard choice for the heaviest and most demanding industrial applications. Cage materials include pressed steel, machined brass, and polyamide for different speed and temperature conditions. Bore forms include cylindrical (standard) and tapered 1:12 and 1:30 for adaptor and withdrawal sleeve mounting on plain shafts - a significant maintenance advantage in difficult-access conveyor and process installations. The E design with optimised internal geometry provides higher load ratings and lower operating temperature compared to previous generations. Spherical roller bearings are the standard choice for the heaviest conveyor drive shafts, vibrating screens and feeders, jaw and gyratory crushers, paper machine rolls, wind turbine gearboxes, sugar mill rolls, and large industrial centrifuges - any application combining high radial load, significant shaft deflection, and demanding service conditions that would overwhelm ball bearing designs.
