Through hollow shaft incremental encoders allow the machine shaft to pass completely through the encoder body from one end to the other. This design is necessary when shaft ends are not accessible for end-mounting, when the encoder must be positioned at a mid-shaft location, or when the shaft layout requires components beyond the encoder on both sides. The encoder body mounts to the machine frame via a torque arm or anti-rotation bracket, while the shaft passes through the bore using a clamping or press-fit arrangement. Bore diameters range from 10mm to over 100mm for large industrial shafts. The through-shaft configuration is particularly useful where the shaft must extend beyond the encoder for additional components such as pulleys, sprockets, or additional machine elements. Output signals follow standard incremental formats: A/B/Z in HTL, TTL/RS422, and NPN/PNP with resolutions up to 5,000 PPR. IP65 and IP67 sealing is standard. Stainless steel and reinforced housing variants suit washdown and heavy-industrial environments where standard housings are inadequate. Typical applications include printing presses where paper web rollers require speed monitoring at mid-shaft positions, textile winding machines, long conveyor shaft sections, and any system where through-shaft mounting provides a more reliable and accessible installation than coupling-based alternatives. The design also suits retrofit installations on existing machinery where shaft end access was not planned for in the original machine design.
